Pods ensure that history is NT bunk
Western Australia Post Newspapers – Jun 16, 2007
Students like Fiona Blakie and Danielle Blanch are following one of the fastest growing trends in education all over the world – podcasting. The catchy word is a clever combination of the words “iPod” and “broadcasting”. Podcasts began on the internet as downloadable radio shows that could be saved on to a portable digital music device such as an iPod or other MP3 player. But the ease of use and portability of the popular music gadget makes the podcast a useful learning tool. When Perth Modern School history teacher Richard Spence was planning revision notes for his students the podcast immediately came to mind. “Most kids have got MP3 players and being able to listen to information that they have gone “Most kids have got MP3 players and being able to listen to information that they have gone through the process of gathering and recording themselves will help them retain that information” he says. “Kids are responding very well; it’s in a format that fits the way they learn it’s novel not like a worksheet so they are very open to it… Mr Spence says the students came up with a list of questions and last month interviewed the University of Western Australia’s Dr Andrea Gaynor and associate professor Jenny Gregory from the History Department. The recordings were uploaded on to Perth Modern’s website where they are downloaded by Year 12 students preparing for their TEE exams. Mr Spence says he is researching how effective the podcasts are compared with traditional revision methods and he hopes the internet-based material can be shared with other schools. More than 40 Year 12 students at Perth Modern School will use the podcasts and the school has provided free CD copies of the recordings for those students who don’t own an iPod or MP3 player. Basic MP3 players can be purchased for as little as $25 but the more popular iPod brand begins at $119. Do you have something to say?.
