The battle against dangerous bugs and bacteria is largely one of information Miller said and podcasts are catching on as a news and information source especially for young people. “We are all about getting word out to the public about things and we’ve traditionally had a phone line and Web page” he said. “But these (podcasts) are something people are listening to so we need to do it. “The podcasts which have been online on weekdays since April but will be issued daily starting Thursday include a recorded report of any current warnings about high bacteria levels due to sewage spills or rain which carries chemicals and bacteria into the water from the ground. The low-tech crowd will still be able to access the same warnings through a telephone hotline and on the county’s environmental health Web site. If the podcasts become popular the county could use them for other types of warnings such as disaster warnings Miller said. The county currently uses a “reverse 911″ system designed to call residents in case of emergency.
