Ask Mick LaSalle Chronicle Movie Critic
San Francisco Chronicle – Aug 26, 2007
Cagney Robinson and Clark Gable all came to prominence playing gangsters and when they started playing good guys their good guys were pretty much the same as their gangsters – similar in character identical in personality. They played gamblers swindlers men on the outside of the society and they paved the way for all the anti-heroes that followed. Dear Mick LaSalle: I have a question about something you discussed in your podcast. You commented on how a few people in a theater can ruin the viewing of a great movie by laughing inappropriately. But have you ever seen a movie that you thought was good but really became ridiculous and laughable and deserved to be laughed at? How is someone supposed to know the difference between a great film and a pretentious wannabe great film that deserves to be laughed at? Paul Arca Fairfield Dear Paul Arca: This is a fair question and I don’t have a good answer for you since come to think of it I see things in movies that strike me as funny on a weekly (sometimes daily) basis and I’m often the only one laughing. I guess one way to tell the difference is if I’m there. If I’m laughing feel free to join me.

The Cauldron Message Board
The Cauldron – The Cauldron (subscription) – Aug 26, 2007
I think the best QB should play regardless of anything if Quinn is the best QB on this team right now then he should be the starter and I would think Romeo would agree with that concept considering his job is on the line but they just dont seem to buy into that and really want Quinn to sit at least for the first couple games this is not the same situation as when Tim Couch started games his rookie year (Couch had no weapons no Line and idiotic coaches) Quinn has a lot more mental toughness in that if he struggles as a rookie he will not get so down on himself his career will be ruined ala Couch’s. All I want is for the best QB to play who gives us the best chance to win and from what I’ve seen and read this summer in training camp and pre-season Quinn seems to be that guy not Frye. IM UT! by the way again great podcast keep this kid coming out with more I’d love to hear this shit on like a weekly basis. selectedIndex > 0) location.
Germany’s Merkel begins weeklong tour of China Japan
International Herald Tribune – Aug 26, 2007
Merkel who is making her second visit to China as chancellor made clear before her departure that she would not shy away from awkward issues. When she last visited in May 2006 she said she had discussed China's human rights record and called it an “important issue of bilateral dialogue. ” “We have such close economic relations with each other such close political relations that we naturally also can discuss questions that are perhaps contentious — human rights product quality; all of that is discussed in open dialogue” Merkel said Saturday in her weekly video podcast. “China has very close relations with Africa and we naturally will speak about how we can combat the terrible human rights violations in Sudan in the Darfur region” she said. China has been accused of not doing enough to stop the bloodshed in Darfur where more than 200000 people have been killed and 2. 5 million others displaced since February 2003. After resisting calls for intervention China dispatched a special envoy and lobbied Sudan to accept a United Nations peacekeeping force.
