Stanly County Releases Podcast Urging North Carolinians To Recapture…

Stanly County has released a podcast on the subject of North Carolina water policy. Stanly County Commissioners and citizens statewide are actively opposing a request by Alcoa to obtain a 50-year license to govern and sustain ownership of the water flowing from the Yadkin River one of the longest rivers in North Carolina. Alcoa first obtained a 50-year license in 1958 to oversee what is known as The Yadkin Project comprised of four hydroelectric stations dams and reservoirs along a 38-mile stretch of the Yadkin River in central North Carolina. The four water reservoirs are High Rick Tuckertown Narrows and Falls. The Yadkin-Pee Dee Watershed as a whole includes twenty-one counties and contains ninety-three state municipalities.

?Whether it is an online explanation of a particularly difficult problem or an exercise to enhance learning in a foreign language podcasts and vodcasts represent important ways to augment an in class experience. ?iTunes U is based on the iTunes Store where millions of people download music movies and TV shows. iTunes U allows professors to post podcast and vodcasts or audio and video files to the iTunes Store. Students will have the option to ?subscribe? to the program or course much like a magazine but free of charge. Emory currently has an internal iTunes U site that is accessible by those with an Emory login ID and password. Students are able to login to the beta test site and access the growing content including class material posted by professors as it becomes available to the Emory community. Similar to Blackboard students can only access courses on iTunes U that they are currently enrolled in… At a lecture sponsored by Emory?s Center for Interactive Teaching ?iTunes U: A Faculty Perspective? Anthropology Lecturer Benjamin Freed said that ?the [iTunes U and Blackboard] together are quite a compatible pairing? Freed has incorporated iTunes U into three of his courses Anthropology 201: Concepts & Methods in Biological Anthropology lab Anthropology 307: Human Evolution and Anthropology 381SWR: Primate Conservation. He said that from a faculty perspective the benefits of iTunes U far outweigh the costs. Creating a podcast requires only a microphone editing software such as Audacity and the iTunes software. Freed said that incorporating iTunes U into his anthropology classes has increased students? participation allowed students to stay on top of course material and most of all has led to better class discussions. The internal site also feature areas where student organizations and publications will be able to post podcasts and vodcasts or video podcast after procedures to govern what material can be posted are set. Cattier said that ?these procedures are being worked on jointly by UTS and Campus Life and will be in place at the start of the next school year. ? ?Planning for the external public site is now in full swing and our hope is for a fall 2008 release shortly after back-to-school? Cattier said.
